As a professional, I believe in ongoing mastery of the skills used everyday in contemporary design. As part of my personal professional development I found it imperative to understand where these trade skills began. I undertook a program to develop my grasp of the foundations of printing techniques, manual metal and woodcut typesetting, paper stock, ink, colour. Technique skills and terminology used everyday in the modern studio is underpinned by and descended form typesetting and historic printing techniques such as composition, imposition, leading, kerning, picas, points. The opportunity to learn the roots of my trade has enhanced my understanding and skills in contemporary innovative design.
